On January 16, 1988 the St. Louis Cardinals football team announced that they were moving to Phoenix.

The Cardinals played for 28 years in St. Louis after moving there from Chicago in 1960.

The Cardinals have played in Phoenix ever since but changed their name to the Arizona Cardinals in 1994.

The Cardinals were the second professional team that the city had lost; the first team was the St. Louis All-Stars that played for only one season in 1923.

The St. Louis Rams moved from Los Angeles in 1995 after owner Georgia Frontiere threaten to sue the NFL if not allowed to move.

On Wednesday the NFL Owners unanimously voted to move the St. Louis Rams back to Los Angeles.
