At the Alief campus, students can earn an Associate of Science and Engineering Science degree, though HCC’s partnership with the University of Texas at Tyler. “Though this degree, you are able to earn bachelor’s degrees in engineering - engineering in mechanical, electrical, and civil,” explained Thompson, “These are seamlessly aligned though the A.S.E. degree that has been established it will feed directly into the UT-Tyler program.”

“I participated for the last three years,” said Stacy Welcome, “It is for a good cause, whenever we can put money forward to and for the career and get them the opportunities specifically for the minority male is the winner.” Welcome added, ”I think it’s very successful because they are able to get participation from large corporations as well as faculty and staff, so just to be able to promote the program itself makes it more successful.” She added that, “it’s not just a once a year type of thing, it’s probably one of the biggest events to support the program.”

Just like how a car show is all about cars, a maker faire is all about makers. A maker is anyone who makes their ideas come to life. Wanjun Zhang, is a maker at TX / RX Labs, a maker-space located in Houston’s East End District. She posed for a picture with the Bulbasaur Planter she designed and 3D printed. She talked about how she brings her designs to life: “I learn the tools, and just the act of working with them helps me figure out my design and what I’m doing.”

Dr. McKechnie used examples from his almost 30 years of practicing chiropractic medicine to show students what cases they would face if they became a chiropractor. He compared x-rays of healthy necks with abnormal necks on his PowerPoint slides. “I tell patients good discs look like an Oreo cookie. Without the filling, something is wrong.”

Houston Mini Maker Faire coming to Stafford Centre Nov. 1st

Houston Mini Maker Faire claims, “we were all born to be learners and creators”. The purpose of maker events is to ignite people’s passion to learn, do, and make. Makers are the technology subsection of DIY (Do It Yourself) culture. Exhibits will feature new technology, robotics, electronics, crafts, engineering, STEM, makers and makerspaces. There will be activities for ages 4 and up.
