Scream 7 dropped in theaters on February 27th, and the horror movie fans have a lot to say. The 7th installment follows after the 2023 6th installment that continues the worldwide phenomenon. With a new Ghostface killer arise, this story follows Sydney Prescott, Neve Campbell, and her family and how her past follows through her family issues with her daughter Tatum Evan, played by Isabel May. But some fans are not happy.
With the 6th installment having a great ending to that film, original creator Kevin Williamson has decided to greenlight Scream 7 in association with Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures. Scream 7 was originally going to continue the story of the Carpenter sisters Sam played by Melissa Barrera and Tara played by Jenna Ortega, but things took a turn when Barrera got fired by Spyglass due to her political stance on the current world issues. Ortega and the directors of the 5th and 6th film, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, decided to also exit the film and not continue telling the story. This current movie director, Kevin Williamson, decided to take on the film and focus on the expansion on Sydney Prescott and her family, especially her daughter Tatum Evans.
In Scream 7, Sydney Prescott is living in the suburbs with her family, and she is having a hard time connecting with her 17-year-old daughter Tatum Evans. Tatum, played by Isabel May, is the same age as Sydney when her life got turned upside down with the start of the Ghostface killings. This installment focuses on Sydney’s past that put her, her family and anyone associated with her in danger. Focusing on the mother-daughter dynamic on how a mother would go through any obstacle to protect her own.
The acting from this film was good for a horror movie. There is only so much an actor can do while being in distress and chased by a killer, but for someone who has seen the past installments, the acting has the same tone as the others. It makes the audience understand the characters’ storyline but nothing that makes them touched by the actor’s performance.
After viewing reviews and personally seeing the film, I would say that Scream 7 feels like a fill in movie. With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 38%, this installment wouldn’t be one of the strongest films. The plotline feels rushed, and the twist, turns, and reveals were just anticlimactic and didn’t bring justice to the reputation of the franchise. Especially when the 7th film doesn’t follow the recent plotline from the past installments, it feels like a let down to the franchise. Horror film lovers should read the reviews before having the idea of watching the 7th film.
