United States to let in Ukrainian Refugees

Amidst the Ukrainian-Russia war, the United States plans to accept up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion. This statement was revealed during Biden’s meeting with European leaders to discuss Western response. Since February 24th, 3.5 million people have fled the Ukraine, putting stress on neighboring countries having to take in so many refugees. Many believe this decision was in response to many U.S. law makers urging Biden to to do more to help those seeking asylum.

As of right now, about seven Ukrainian refugees have resettled in the United States, with Biden saying the number will soon be increased. The Biden administration says after they take the 100,000 in, that they will take “full range legal pathways” to bring them here. Such as the U.S. refugee resettlement program, which will provide a path to citizenship. Another way Ukrainians can gain entry is through existing visas avenues and a relief program known as “humanitarian parole,” which will allow people into the country on the pretense of an emergency.

While many are happy the Biden administration is taking in refugees, many find it hypocritical given the response to refugee crises in the past. Many feel there is racist undertones to it all, given that the refugees in the past that were turned down were mostly POCs and many Ukrainians are white. However, one could argue that there was a different administration in charge entirely at that time. One thing for sure, a country as big and advanced as the United States has the means to help those seeking asylum, it’s up to the United States to also do something to help. Especially if the U.S. wants more allies in the future, given Russia is definitely not an ally now.
