Tre White scored a season high 23 points to lead No. 14 Kansas to a convincing 69-56 win over No. 5 Houston at Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night. The win gave Kansas a 41-home game winning streak while hosting Big Monday in a packed house under coach Bill Self. The Jayhawks are 52-1 on Big Monday to clarify the situation.
Freshman Darryn Peterson scored 14 points on 5- of -14 shooting in 30 minutes for the Jayhawks (21-7, 11-4 Big 12). Kansas took a devastating loss last Saturday to unranked Cincinnati 84-68, which dropped six spots from the AP rankings.
Bryson Tiller had 11 points, 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks as well as three blocks, which handed the Cougars (23-5, 11-4 Big 12) their third consecutive loss–all against top 15 opponents. Houston hasn’t dropped three straight since 2017.
For Cougars head Coach Kelvin Sampson, he was not impressed with their shooting performances throughout the night going for 32 percent from the field (21 of 66) and 21 percent from three points (5 of 24). The Cougars were 9 for 9 on the free throw line impressing the Jayhawks. Kingston Flemings scored 16 for the Cougars but the second half of the game would be the difference maker throughout the night.
Kansas hasn’t lost consecutive home games since the 1988-89 season; Roy Williams’ first as coach. Two weeks ago, they took down top-ranked Arizona at The Phog.
Kansas used a 12-0 run early in the second half to turn a two-point lead into a 49-35 advantage at the under-12 timeout. The margin stretched to 20 before Houston went on a 7-0 spurt, but the Cougars never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.
The Jayhawks missed nine of their first 10 shots, going 8:28 without a field goal. But they closed the first half with an 11-0 run to take a 31-27 lead into the break.
