My time at Houston Community College was a moment to remember. I can recall trying to get into a four-year university after high school, but with the SAT score I made not meeting my expectations, I was given the opportunity by my high school counselor about HCC. Seeing how I performed well in my high school classes, she told me about the Honors College where a colleague of hers, Carolyn Cross, was the Director at Northline which includes a program that provides a full-ride scholarship, along with a fully-funded study abroad trip. Knowing I couldn’t let this opportunity go to waste, I applied and was able to get accepted in. It was quite convenient being in a small cohort where we were able to have most of the same courses and help each other with whatever assignments we had difficulty on. I have met some of the most kind and down to earth people during my time, where I would always look forward to attending classes with them.
The biggest highlight of my two years at HCC was where our Honors College traveled to Montreal, Canada for the Spring Break. This was my first time travelling out of the United States without my parents, but knowing I was surrounded by the company of my peers, I knew I didn’t have to be nervous. During our trip, we visited different locations around Montreal including museums, a basilica, a variety of graffiti and murals on the buildings, as well as trying out foods from all kinds of restaurants. Being on this trip was also a chance to experience having a more personal bond with my peers and it’s a blessing to encounter that in another country.
My plans after HCC is to be able to transfer to a four-year university. Just last week, I was able to get accepted into the College of the Ozarks and I couldn’t be more excited. This college provides free tuition where I work my way through without having student debt. Initially applying to the fall term, they placed me in the Spring term starting in January of next year, where I will be studying under the video production major. In the next couple of months, I plan on saving up money so I will be able to manage my finances when I attend college alone. I want to thank all my friends and Dr. Cross for helping me along the way of reaching my educational goals and am thankful to have attended HCC.
