How to Citizen: Calling Your Reps

Ophelia Onobrakpeya, Student Writier

With the proposal to change the way that the internet functions (RESTRICT Act) and the most recent incident of gun violence in Nashville, it is easy to get angry and discouraged. The difficulty of being an engaged citizen, with the news every day as well as everyday stresses, adding another thing to life just seems daunting.  It may seem like it would take a monumental effort to make a little progress, but, to be honest, it would take a few small actions from many people. The following is a step-by-step guide on how to find and contact your representative, including a form letter to use regarding gun violence.

  • Go to https://wrm.capitol.texas.gov/home
  • Using either your home address or your county, you will be taken to a list of all the people that represent you in state and national government.

  • Click on the congressperson and more information on their congressional page. There, you will find their contact information.

  • At this point, you can choose if you want to call or email your representative. Below is a form letter regarding the need for stricter gun laws.

Dear [Congressperson’s Name],

I am writing to you as one of your constituents who is deeply concerned about the issue of gun violence in our country. As you are aware, this issue has caused immense harm to individuals, families, and communities across our nation.

As a voter and concerned citizen, I am urging you to take bold action to address this issue. I strongly believe that we need comprehensive gun control measures to keep our communities safe. I know this is a complex issue, but I urge you to work with your colleagues to find solutions that prioritize the safety and well-being of all Americans.

I want to make it clear that gun violence is a critical issue for me and for many of your constituents. I am committed to holding our elected officials accountable for their actions on this issue. If I do not see meaningful progress toward gun control, I will have no choice but to support your opponent in the upcoming election.

I hope that you will take my concerns seriously and take action to address this issue. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Civic involvement is not only important for the function of the government but contacting your elected officials would alert them to a well-informed public and alert them to the volume of new voters.
