In 1999 then City of Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown created a committee to work on the creation of an African American Museum in the city of Houston. After some time of contemplation, the committee came to a conclusion to divide the structed idea into two. One being the Houston African American Museum, where designation was received in 2000. Though in 2007 the museum went through an official name change to the Houston Museum of African American Culture to show a better presentation of their purpose. Purpose being to show the community art and history through the museums’ contemporary experience.  

  Through February 4, 2023, to April 8, 2023, The Houston Museum of African American Culture will introduce “Ellsworth Ausby: Odyssey,” an exhibition representing the paintings of artist Ellsworth Ausby. The exhibition reflects on Ellsworth Ausby’s vibrant abstract artwork in different geometric forms on different structures on freely open space. The exhibition presents eighteen painted pieces from 1970 – 1976 by Ellsworth Ausby.

Through February 4, 2023, to April 8, 2023, will be presenting Afi Ese: Flights from Antiquity. Black portraitures tell a story based on the generational past of individuals and community. With the main purpose the represent “Flight,” as a reference for “the dight for lost history stolen from the African continent.

The permanent exhibition in the Houston Museum of African American Culture was created on February 19, 2022, in dedication of the community’s most public symbols of police brutality. There are three portraits located in the permanent exhibition. One being of George Floyed who had passed away because of police brutality in 2020, Sandra Blan who was the purpose of the Sandra Bland Act, and Robbie Tolan who was unarmed black man and shot by the police.  

The Houston Museum of African American Culture is open three days out of the week Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Everyday open the museum is open 11am to 6pm, and admission is always free. The museum is able to be a Non–Profit because of the museum’s membership of donors that help bring free shows to the community.  

 The Houston Museum of African American Culture is located on 4807 Caroline Street, Houston, Tx, 77004 and is welcomed to more visitors in the future.
