Houston Community College-Southwest men’s soccer team captured their second Houston Club Sports Conference (HCSC) on Sunday Oct. 26, at Houston Amateur Sports Park.

The Eagles upset the University of Houston-Downtown 6-1 in the championship match-up, earning a trip to the NIRSA (National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association) Region IV Tournament at The University of Texas at Dallas.  This is the second trip to regionals for a HCCS college and the first time for the Southwest college. Under the guidelines of coach Ubaldo Lucio and his work team; the team was able to accomplish their goals for this season tournament. “As a team, we fulfilled our expectations for the tournament. We set out to be the best and we did it.” Ubaldo said, “It was a fairly simple tournament, but demanding at the same time. Our success was because of the way we play against our opponents, always keeping in mind that we would be the winning team.” Coach “Uby,” as his players like to call him, has seen them grow in and out the field. Southwest soccer attributes their success to the family atmosphere and how the teamwork helps them to achieve all their goals.

I want to raise our competitiveness and development out of our environment. I would like to test the efficacy of our game-play and if those two strategies work as they should, be able to finish in the top four of the region.

Coach Ubaldo and his team have  their minds set on the gold, and they will do everything to obtain it.  HCC-Southwest will have their first NIRSA regional match this Friday, October 31, against The University of Kansas at 6 pm. On Saturday, they will meet Texas Tech, the current regional champions. The NIRSA tournament is made up off 18 teams.  Only the best of the tournament will be able to go to the Nationals Championship at Memphis, Tennessee.
