October brings its familiar mix of autumnal charm and celebration—but it also calls attention to an important cause: National Disability Employment Awareness Month. At HCC, cultivating inclusive pathways to the workforce is a priority, with programs like VAST Academy and Pathways Bridge to Careers empowering students with intellectual disabilities for meaningful careers. With a team of devoted educators and advisors, it’s proving that inclusive education is far more than a program—it’s a movement built on care and commitment.
The VAST Academy provides students with a wide range of prospects—from vocational certificates and career readiness credentials to internship placements and employment support. Throughout their endeavor, participants are embraced by a warm, encouraging support system filled with professionals dedicated to helping them gain confidence and discover where their true passions and strengths lie. The Academy also offers the Eagles Club—a lively, prestigious organization where student leaders are honored each year at college award ceremonies. The club itself has earned Organization of the Year multiple times, reflecting the enthusiasm of its members.
Among those who’ve soared the highest is Erinne Golliher. Currently studying Fashion at HCC and exploring her artistic side, Golliher has become a cornerstone of the Pathways Bridge to Careers program. Over the past six years, she has not only bloomed in her role at The Pursuit Center but has also been recognized as a shining example of the program’s success.
“Since joining the program, I have witnessed remarkable growth in Erinne’s confidence and skills,” said transition specialist Nicole Abner. “I am incredibly proud of her willingness to take risks and learn new things.” Being the creative person that she is, VAST has helped her step out of her comfort zone and truly embrace her love of fashion. “Helping students uncover their gifts and talents while guiding them toward meaningful opportunities is immensely rewarding,” Abner noted.
In Pathways, passion and purpose go hand in hand—and Carl Homan is further proof of that. By day, he supports others through the All-Abilities program at Tracy Gee Community Center; by night, he’s exploring new talents and challenges through the program. “Carl was inspired to explore Digital Communications because of his personal interests and his desire to advance in his current job. He recognized the potential for creativity and innovation in this field, which encouraged him to delve deeper,” said Abner. Now majoring in Digital Communications at HCC, Homan is crafting his curiosity into real-world savvy.
Both Golliher and Homan are VAST graduates who continue to inspire those around them. Through the VAST Academy and the Pathways Bridge to Careers program, they’ve mastered essential skills, from executive functioning to balancing work and classes at HCC, all while carving out their own paths. “These programs have inspired them to achieve a fulfilling work-life balance and have equipped them to confidently advocate for themselves in both the classroom and the workplace,” reflected Abner. “Contributing to their success and empowerment is a deeply fulfilling aspect of my role. The relationships formed during this journey, along with the stories of resilience and achievement, inspire me every day.”
In July, HCC VAST announced that the Academy is expanding to the Acres Homes and North Forest campuses in northeast Houston, reaching even more students eager to discover their potential. Nicole Abner remains dedicated to her role as a transition specialist, describing it as a deeply rewarding opportunity to support students who are often overlooked, underserved, or marginalized. With passion and mentors like Abner lighting the way, VAST illustrates that sometimes the most enchanting transformations begin with a single chance to shine.
