The sequel to “The Simpsons Movie” is set to be released on July 23, 2027, exactly twenty years after the first film’s debut. The production, by Disney’s 20th Century Studios, announced the date alongside the first official poster, which features the iconic pink donut with the phrase “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” This announcement places the yellow family on the release calendar, replacing a now-removed untitled Marvel project. To date, no trailer or teaser has been released, and plot details are being kept under wraps.
The first film, titled “The Simpsons Movie,” was released worldwide on July 26 and 27, 2007. Directed by series veteran David Silverman, the plot follows the aftermath of Homer polluting Lake Springfrield, which leads the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to encase the entire city under a giant glass dome. The film was a major commercial success, grossing over $526 million worldwide on a budget of $75 million, establishing itself as one of the highest-grossing traditional animated films of all time.
With the television series already renewed through its 40th season, slated for 2028-2029, the return of The Simpsons to the big screen is a strategic move for one of entertainment’s most enduring and beloved franchises. Showrunner Matt Selman has noted that the series’ availability on Disney+ has helped rejuvenate the brand and attract a new generation of fans, which undoubtedly creates fertile ground for the upcoming film release.
