June 8–14 | MATCH Theater | Alley Theatre | Hobby Center
The Fade to Black Arts Festival returns to Houston from June 8th to 14th, showcasing powerful performances that celebrate Black artistry, culture, and identity. The biennial event highlights the work of Black playwrights, poets, and performers from across the country, offering a rare platform for original plays, spoken word, and master classes exploring justice, legacy, and creative freedom.
This year’s festival features a star-studded lineup, with Phylicia Rashad serving as festival ambassador. Other notable guests include ballerina Lauren Anderson, spoken word artist Se7en the Poet, and actors Jason Dirden and Malik Yoba.
Founded in 2007, Fade to Black has become a hub for rising and established Black creatives.
“Even though we found out late that we had the same freedoms as others, we still celebrate those freedoms,” said Denise O’Neal, executive director of the Fade to Black Arts Festival.
The festival is organized by Shabach Enterprise, a nonprofit arts company launched 13 years ago to address the gap in Black creative representation across Texas.

“It’s something refreshing,” O’Neal said. “It touches on liberty, freedom, and establishing who you are, while celebrating the arts.”
Fade to Black will offer programming for all ages and interests, from youth camps to showcases in film, theater, poetry, and live music. Events will be held at MATCH Theater, Alley Theatre, the Hobby Center, and other downtown venues.
“I hope attendees’ expectations are exceeded,” O’Neal added. “I hope the community takes full advantage of everything this festival has to offer.”
