Upon entering Houston Community College (HCC) I had a lot of self-doubt and a lot of unknowns in my future. To be honest I had no idea what to expect so I registered on the last day to register. There where a few things in the way of my dream of studying sonography because I was an undocumented student.
I decided to start with my basics, as I was unable process into the sonography program due to my status. Initially, it was difficult to come to terms with this, but this ended up being a blessing because it allowed me to study something I love, and change careers.
I switched my major at HCC to Public Relations, Advertising, and Communications. When I took these classes, I realized that these classes were what I was interested in and good at. Eventually I came to like them. I found meaning and purpose in this new passion.
There were a lot of challenges. There were moments of hopelessness and uncertainty about my future. But I got through the bad time with the support of my professor, my peers, and my determination. I have come to appreciate my journey, and to make the most of my experience. I am committed to graduating. I am still figuring out my career path. But to obtain a bachelor’s degree, I plan to transfer to the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD). I hope to use my training and experiences to one day pursue a career in corporate communications.
Since becoming a student at HCC, my experiences have changed. I have learned to become more persistent, flexible, and more empowered by imagining and pursuing my ideals. I have future hopes, dreams, and excitement, and appreciate what I have already experienced.
