My name is Veronica Russo, and I am a 21-year-old Communications major. I began my college journey in 2022, enrolling at Houston Community College after graduating from Cinco Ranch High School. I am currently working toward my associate’s degree and plan to transfer to Texas A&M this fall to pursue my bachelor’s.
Like many new college students, I was initially unsure of what career path I wanted to follow. During my time at HCC, I underwent a process of self-discovery, utilizing the opportunity to explore my interests and passions to narrow down my options for a major.
I looked back at both past and present hobbies in search of a pattern. I realized that, no matter the form, I have always had a keen interest in media: what it’s used for and the endless opportunities it can provide. I have also always been passionate about sharing my thoughts, whether online, in school, or with friends and family, and I admire all forms of self-expression.
In the end, my major had been right in front of me: Communications and Mass Media is the perfect fit for me.
When it was time to choose which universities I wanted to apply to, I was ready to settle for something with a high acceptance rate and close to home. I didn’t think I was capable of getting into a big school and living on my own.
Growing up as a twin, being side by side in almost everything we did stunted any possibility of having separate lives. Through the years, we’ve grown more independent from each other, but the thought of not having her in the same classes or the same house made me feel uneasy.
I was scared of moving out and not having my family by my side all the time. I refused to branch out and challenge myself.
It wasn’t until my younger sister transferred to Texas A&M earlier this year and moved out that my outlook changed. I began to consider a similar future for myself. Seeing her bravery and determination inspired me to give myself a chance.
So, with the support and encouragement of my loved ones, my hope in my potential was restored. This fall, I will be moving out and starting my first semester at university—and I could not be more excited.
