3 years ago, was when I enrolled in HCC. I wasn’t sure if it was the right choice for me at the time, but my parents always pushed me towards my education.
In high school, I wasn’t the best student, so when I was asked about continuing my education after school, I didn’t have an answer, or I just said work.
My mom wasn’t happy with my work response, so she pushed me to continue my studies. Just wasn’t sure what I wanted to study.
I wasn’t good at math, also not a history fan. I didn’t like to read or write, just lazy at that point. I did play sports in school, also liked to watch and talk about them.
The idea of making a career in sports media came to mind; if it’s in broadcasting, journalism, announcing, or potentially a sports talk show, the possibilities are endless.
I decided to study Communications Media Arts to one day have a career in sports media. My first year at HCC was mainly just school, with no job at the time.
Even though semester 1 was just focusing on school, sometimes when I had too much free time assignments weren’t turned in, or missed classes, so notes weren’t taken.
I took this Learning Framework class first semester, which inspired me, helped me create goals for my profession, and gave me confidence in my ability to learn and continue my education.
My mom would say, “The first year is the hardest.” I completed my first year, and besides the missing assignments and taking history, I can say that my first year went a lot smoother than I thought.
In my second year at HCC, I was hired at Target, my first job. I wasn’t sure if I could do school and work, dropping out of school wasn’t an option, so I decided to try both.
Making my schedule around my school days wasn’t the problem. It was the time I was getting scheduled. At first, before changing my availability, I would be scheduled at any time.
Meaning some days I was scheduled in the morning, which was fine, I would get home from work and complete my work for the day.
Days I was scheduled afternoons, I would sleep in until it was time for work, then work all day, come home, and crash. Assignments weren’t being done grades were slipping a bit.
Had to make some calls, got my scheduled changed to mornings, and eventually got back on top of things and stress-free.
Currently finishing up my third year and graduating in a couple of weeks. So far, I can say that my third year was smoother, and I’ve gained more confidence with my work throughout the years.
Truly, my journey at HCC has been a blessing, and I couldn’t want my experience to be any different from what it was. I’m proud of my accomplishments at HCC and who I’ve grown to be. I plan to transfer to the University of Houston and pursue a career in sports media.
