The NCAA just announced some big news that will change the world for college wrestling. Women’s wrestling officially became the 91st NCAA championship sports. This means that starting in 2026, women’s wrestling will have a national championship tournament. This is a huge victory for the sport of wrestling, as it has grown so much over the past couple of years, especially in Texas. Jose Lazo, head wrestling coach for Texas Wesleyan University, states “It shows the hard work and dedication of female wrestlers all over the world. It gives them the recognition they deserve.” There used to be a time where girls had to wrestle boys at tournaments because of the lack of participation in the girls wrestling divisions, to now have that shift of a full championship just for woman’s wrestling is a huge achievement for the sport, coaches, and athletes. Wrestling is hard mentally and physically, that requires hours of hard work on and off the mat. For example, keeping up with the right nutrition while also working towards getting stronger in the weight room. Woman’s wrestling in Texas is the fastest growing sport in the state as over 200 high schools have a girls wrestling team. So many athletes are now more motivated to wrestle in college and continue their journey in this tough sport. So now coming in 2026 be on the look out for the new set of national champions.
