For most students, transferring from a two-year to a four-year university can be an exciting and stressful time. Questioning if all your credits will transfer in is concerning. Too often, students end up having to retake courses all because their transfer university doesn’t recognize the previous coursework. But could there be a way to guarantee a seamless transfer that could potentially save time and money?
The articulation agreement that HCC has in place with multiple universities is just that! A tool every college student and future student should know about.
What is an Articulation Agreement?
Simply put, an articulation agreement is a partnership between a two-year college and a four-year university. The agreement ensures your associate degree aligns perfectly with the transferring school’s bachelor’s degree, meaning your hard-earned credits transfer with ease. You would enter your new school as a junior with no redundant coursework.
If you have ever transferred before, you know that some courses may not apply to the new degree plan, which leads to you retaking classes you already have on your transcript. That is a frustrating and costly setback. An articulation agreement alleviates all of the stress around transferring, ultimately saving you money and time.
According to Mr. Zachary Schroeder (Specialist, Faculty Credential Instruction Services), HCC offers partnerships with 47 four-year institutions, creating over 300 individual transfer pathways. These pathways ensure the credits you earn from HCC transfer directly into a four-year school, helping students stay on track for their bachelor’s degrees.

Why You Should Know About the Articulation Agreement
Well, I transferred into HCC with credits from other community colleges, and not all my credits transferred into my HCC degree plan, which was a little frustrating. While attending HCC and learning about the agreements, I recently discovered that HCC has an articulation agreement with UH-Downtown, where my Mass Communication degree would fit into their four-year Mass Communication degree seamlessly.
I want to attend Texas Southern University; although they have an articulation agreement, they do not have one for Mass Communication. This means I need to work with both schools’ advisors to ensure my credits transfer without issue, or I could decide to just go to UH-Downtown.
Take Advantage of the Articulation Agreement
•Transferring can be stressful, so take advantage of these agreements already set forward between the schools.
•Check your major’s catalog to ensure your associate degree matches with the university’s major catalog.
•Stay in touch with your advisors and reach out to the transferring school’s advisor before you transfer.
