As the new academic session rolls into the Spring Semester at Houston Community College, students are ready to tackle their courses to pursue their educational goals. Whether they are stepping into classrooms at Coleman, Central, Northeast, Southwest, Northwest, or Southeast campuses, or attending online classes, students are ready to embark on their education journeys. This is the time to refresh mindsets, seek inspiration, and embrace the challenges that can lead to ambition.
While HCC contains a variety of resources to provide for students, there are several key resources students can use to help achieve in their academic endeavors. The library services offer many benefits, such as accessing textbooks, research materials, and quiet study spaces that are essential for concentration. Each campuses libraries differ but keep an eye out for activities and events the librarians host. Additionally, tutoring is accessible for all, make sure to keep an eye out for extra help needed. The syllabus is an important source for students to help them achieve success in their courses. Helpful resources such as calendars, reminders on devices, and a planner will assist them in remembering dates to ensure they do not miss any important assignments.
Students like Shekinah Abolo, a journalism major at HCC Central who is preparing to transfer to the university of her choice, exemplifies the experience of being a college student at HCC. Shekinah enjoys writing and journaling as her hobbies. Additionally, Shekinah will be joining The Egalitarian team as a writer for the spring semester club! As this page concludes, The Egalitarian had the privilege to interview her:
What is the biggest challenge you have faced in transitioning to college life?
Shekinah: Attending classes. Some days, it’s just so hard getting up and starting the day seems so daunting.
What is your best study advice?
Shekinah: Repetition is key and making “shortcuts” to remember terms, like, “Hamilton Seventy-ATE (78) when he said that the judicial branch is the weakest one.”
If your life was on a TV show, which one would it be?
Shekinah: I actually have a TV show of my own in my diary called “Same Old New”. It’s a fun way of reflecting on my life. I think if it was an actual tv show people would be mad at my character for continually making not- so-good decisions, so it’d be whatever show that features a complex yet likable main character.
