Last month on the Spring Branch campus, HCC’s first ever Caribbean Club had their first meeting of the year.
There’s lots of fun to be had when you’re surrounded by people that share your cultural background or those that are simply curious about it, and fun was had over ice cream and pizza as the officers presented the club overview.
“Our club isn’t just for Caribbean students—we welcome everyone to join and learn about the rich culture of the Caribbean. It’s a region full of creativity, vibrant colors, and unique traditions,” said the president, Bradley Badenock, in an email.
“We host events where people can experience Caribbean carnivals, food, music, and more. Plus, we’ve recently secured sponsorships that will provide club swag, volunteer opportunities, and more fun activities for everyone.”
The aforementioned carnivals will be the focal point of the club during the spring semester. In the meantime, you can expect collaborations with MESA music and the anime club, along with movie nights and t-shirt workshops.
As the club only opened last year, they’re still trying to find their footing; the only leadership positions currently filled are the president and vice president, so they’re looking for a historian, treasurer, and secretary. But once they get their foot on the ground, they “plan to bring more awareness” to issues affecting the Caribbean.
Meetings are held every Tuesday. If distance is a problem, you can interact with members on their discord. The signup, contact information, and link to group chats can be found on their linktree.
Clubs like this are a great way for forming community and finding purpose. In fact, it was the Asian Culture Club that inspired Badenock to open this one.
If you can, check it out.
